World Heli Challenge -Chinese Downhill-

World Heli Challenge:  Day 3 Chinese Downhill
Originally I thought everyone; men, women, skiers, and snowboarders lined up at the top of a face and just pointed it to the finish line.  While I think the chance of carnage is a bit high, if nobody turned nobody would hit each other, right?
This turned out to be the most nerve racking day because there was a lot of waiting around while the crew down below manifested “the grande finale surprise”.  Amber and I were also aware that second place was up for grabs and we were in contention.  I had weight on my side-heavy bindings, heavy board and a badonkadonk that all my friends at home love to spank every time I bend over to strap in.  HA! It worked!  Amber sneaked ahead of me but just before the finish line I crouched into the classic tuck needed to get around Crested Butte and whoosh!
The highlights of the day were watching Ralph Backstrom, who had busted up his shoulder on day one, leave his competition in the dust and Ted Davenport and Geoff Small straight line top to bottom, head to head, clearly ahead of the pack, going for gold.
Our surprise began with a high altitude bar of VNC cocktails and a perfectly powdered wind limp to huck our meat.  Back flips were on the menu with Mike Wilson managing three at a time.  Even I did it!  Hear that Ralphy?  I went upside down, like four times, mostly to my face but hey, it’s a start.  I’m going back in time, to the days of front flip Susan, now it just has to snow every single day…
Once all athletes, event crew, and heli pilots had a good buz it was time to operate machinery.  Harvey and Toby are the cowboys of NZ heli flying and they were ready for a piece of action.  Low altitude fly bys, three sixties, dropping us off in the river below…all part of the game.
Harro arranged a sweet taxi back to the parking lot-SPEED BOATS!  They liked spinning around in circles and banking the sides for fun too.
The party continued at the Hawea Motel where I stayed up till the rock star hour of eleven pm, unlike my fellow competitors that probably watched the sun rise.
