The morning begins again with a bowl of Muesli and HELICOPTER MADNESS! Three helis buzzing around shuttling media, judges, and athletes to the base of the venue. Each time a heli load is dropped off the mouths drop, the eyes widen, and there’s a chorus that goes something like this “No way, no f**king way, really, that’s really our venue, SICK!” What lies before us is the most beautifully blanketed landscape of chutes, spires, spines, and cliffs. I’ve never seen such a perfect canvas to play on. There was so much to choose from it was a bit mind boggling. Harro, the event organizer, kicked off the day with knee deep pow turns right down the main couloir, beaming from ear to ear.
The day went smooth, no major injuries, weather held firm, even had enough time to have a second run! I was pretty stoked on my performance because I went exactly where I intended to ride. Creating a visual map of your options so as not to get lost without ever actually skiing the terrain has taken me years of practice. Not to mention you’ve got to rip it top to bottom fast, no time to look around and confirm, yes, I am about to drop into the chute that ends with the fifteen foot cliff, not the fifty footer!
The day ended peacefully with an amazing sunset on Lake Hawea.
