Mt. Aspiring National Park
With the sun out for over a week now and the winds howling again the skiing is getting a bit rough. And I’ve learned I’m a snow snob. While everyone is waiting to see if it warms I immediately write off the option to snowboard, knowing riding a chair lift for hard, loud conditions is not my thing. Now if we could hike for some turns I wouldn’t care as much about the conditions. There must be something wrong with me. Touring in New Zealand is a serious mission. What would be a full day tour in Colorado only gets you to the snow line outside Wanaka. I coorce Rydor and Jake to join me for a hike to the Rob Roy Glacier at the edge of Mt. Aspiring National Park. It starts in the dry valley floor, through rain forest, to the terminus of the glacier, all with the first hand viewing of an avalanche up high. Pretty cool.
